Is morality still a part of our education system?

I believe that teaching what's right and what's wrong is still a part of our education system. Why else would schools enforce punishment for wrong behaviors? For an example, if a student gets into a fight with another student, the school would suspend them or in some cases expell them. Through punishment the schools try to correct wrong actions, but I believe by then it is too late.
However, the schools are not responsible for the moral upbringing of children, but the parents.
